Logo Designer vs. Canva or AI Logo Generator: What's Best for Your Small Business?
Why hire a professional brand designer instead of making a logo in Canva or using an AI logo generator?
A Canva template or AI logo generator gives you a logo. A professional brand designer gives you a brand with meaning that fits your business, your clients and your goals. If you're testing an idea, either one can get you started. If you're building a business you want to grow, a designer is the better investment.
I'm Lisa, a Denver brand and Squarespace web designer at Rockfish Design Studio. Here's the real-talk breakdown.
What do Canva and AI logo generators actually do?
With an AI logo generator, you type in your business name, pick a style, and get a handful of options in minutes. In Canva, you start from a logo template and swap in your name and colors. Both are fast and cheap, and for a brand-new side hustle, that can be totally fine.
But neither one knows anything about you. They don't know why you started, who your dream clients are, or how you want them to feel when they land on your website. They're built from shared templates, icons and styles that everyone else can use too. Canva is great for social posts and flyers, but your logo deserves more.
What do you lose with a generated logo?
Meaning. Your logo should tell your story at a glance. A generic icon can't.
Recognition. If your mark looks like 100 other businesses, clients won't remember yours.
Flexibility. One logo file rarely works on your website, Instagram, business cards and signage.
Ownership questions. Canva's license doesn't allow its templates and elements to be used as part of a trademark or business name. And in the U.S., artwork made entirely by AI generally can't be copyrighted. Read the fine print before you build a business on it.
Confidence. Nobody wants to apologize for their logo every time they hand over a business card.
What does a brand designer do differently?
Every brand I design starts with you. Before I sketch a thing, we dig into your story, your clients and where you want your business to go. Then I design a logo suite and brand assets full of meaning and personality, so everything from your website to your Instagram looks cohesive and unmistakably you.
And because I'm a founder and boy mom too (I launched Rockfish in 2020, the same week I was laid off), I know you don't have time for a messy process. You get one organized client portal, a clear timeline and a real partner cheering you on.
When is a Canva or AI logo good enough?
Real talk? When you're still testing the waters. If you're not sure the business will stick, a quick Canva or AI logo can hold you over. Once you're booking clients, raising your prices or launching a website, it's time for a brand that looks as legit as you are.
Quick Q&A:
How much does it cost to hire a logo designer? At Rockfish, a custom brand identity starts at $2,450, with payment plans up to 6 months and no extra fees. See packages.
Can I trademark a Canva logo? Not if it's built from Canva's templates or design elements. Canva's content license doesn't allow its content (other than fonts) to be used as part of a trademark or business name. A custom logo from a designer is made to be yours.
Can a designer fix a logo I made in Canva? Many of my clients come to me after outgrowing a DIY logo. We'll talk through what's working and build a brand you're proud to share.
Do you design websites too? Yes. I design custom Squarespace websites, and pairing them with your branding starts at $8,250.
